Lament for Victory



Day 12


 

Oh Maharbal, gladdened by such conquest,

Breathless, riding 'cross Falernian plains,

What doubt bites these poor tormented fetlocks,

As bewilders this Eternal City,

Here where triumph harkens but destruction,

Your sweet mercurial captain doomed to fail.
